“I wish I had a camera on my forehead and you had a screen on yours. Then I could show you what I am thinking.” That statement might sound strange to most of us, but that's how visual-spatial learners think.

The traditional classroom setting defeats a visual-spatial learner, who may also be twice exceptional (2E), ADHD, and/or Autistic. When your classroom is designed to cater to their unique needs, not only will your visual-spatial learner's potential be unlocked, every student in your class will reap the rewards.

Differentiated instruction has developed a bad reputation in the Advanced Placement (AP) world. This is unfortunate because every student, from the advanced learner to the SPED learner, can benefit when educators have a firm grasp on how to use differentiation.

Social and emotional needs of gifted children is a hot topic right now, and for good reason. Our gifted students are more than just little (or big!) brains. They require nurturing and development of both their hearts and their minds. So what do we do when that social/emotional development doesn’t keep pace with the cognitive development?

Imagine the frustration of being diagnosed, labeled, and even called “crazy”; when you’re actually a perfectly “normal” genius. Mental health and behavioral disorder diagnoses are a hot topic in education, and for good reason. Diagnosis and medication rates are skyrocketing, and gifted students often fall victim to misdiagnosis due to the complex, every-day functioning of their brains.

Negative stereotypes are often associated with those raised in generational poverty. Of all these stereotypes, one of the most damaging in education today is that students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds are less likely to be gifted. Low verbal skills often mask true giftedness. It’s time to get past the stereotypes and begin uncovering giftedness in our low-SES students.

With so much effort and attention placed on raising low performing students, researchers are finding that G/T students in the classroom are often stagnating in their achievement. While this group of learners are being left behind, low-income gifted students are falling even further behind their higher-income classmates. Good program design can address all of these achievement gaps, including the unique needs of low-income students.

The difference between an Olympic runner and a weekend jogger isn’t simply that one runs faster than the other. Just as an Olympic athlete’s body trains and functions differently, the brain of a gifted student must be trained differently. Gifted courses should not just be harder versions of regular classroom work. They should be tailored and designed to stretch, challenge, and engage the brains of our gifted learners.

Can you imagine driving a race car with only bicycle brakes to stop you? In this digital age, our students' brains have been trained like race cars by the volume and speed of information that they have been processing since a very young age. But what happens when they must slow down and process information in a non-digital setting, like a classroom? In this course you will learn how to identify the effects of digital media on students and how to apply proven methods for adding depth and complexity to your AP and pre-AP classrooms.
