Encouraging Creativity

It used to be that society was separated into two classes: the smart and the creative (or left brained/right brained). Today, we know that creativity is an essential key to success for every student. In “Encouraging Creativity” Nicole Shannon explores why creative thinking is so important today, debunks creative myths, and shares activities you can use in your classroom.

In this 1-hour course, you will learn:

• Core principles in creative thinking from thought leaders like Sir Ken Robinson, Michael Michalko and Ian Byrd
• Practical strategies for inspiring your students to think creatively
• The connection between creativity and long-term success for students
• Strategies for using creativity to offset the stresses of standardized testing

Ms. Shannon has over 18 years of experience in gifted education. She currently serves as the Coordinator of Gifted/Advanced Academic Services for Round Rock ISD and taught in the district for 10 years before taking the position. Previously, Ms. Shannon has served as a teacher, curriculum coordinator, and school principal at private schools in Hawaii, California and Virginia. She has presented to teachers, counselors, administrators, and parents on a variety of topics in gifted education. Ms. Shannon received her Bachelors degree in Applied Learning and Development from the University of Texas at Austin. Ms. Shannon is currently completing her M.Ed. in Teacher Leadership with a specialization in Gifted/Talented at Lamar University in Beaumont.
